UAB Briefs: Star bass player, student art, Dragon Egg Hunt

A TOP 10 PLAYER

Acclaimed bassist Victor Wooten, winner of five Grammy Awards, will play with his trio in Jemison Concert Hall.at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m., according to a UAB news release.

His trio includes drummer Dennis Chambers and saxophonist, songwriter and arranger Bob Franceschini.

A founding member of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Wooten was named as one of the top 10 bass players of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Wooten is also the only multiple winner of Bass Player Magazine’s readers’ poll.

In September, Wooten released his 10th solo album and his first in five years, the self-produced “TRYPNOTYX.”

The versatile Wooten is also a composer, music educator, author, acrobat, magician and naturalist, according to a news release from his publicist.

STUDENT ART ON DISPLAY

Students in the UAB Department of Art and Art History will have a chance to show off their work in the 42nd annual Juried Student Exhibition to be held at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AEIVA) from Monday, March 19, through Friday, April 6.

There are more than 80 works in the show, which was curated by guest juror Virginia Griswold, a sculptor based in Nashville, Tenn., according to a UAB news release.

There will be a free public reception on Friday, March 23, from 5-7 p.m., with brief remarks by Griswold at 6 p.m.

During her visit to UAB in February to judge the works, Griswold also held one-on-one studio visits with UAB BFA students.

The Juried Student Exhibition was open to all students currently enrolled in courses in the DAAH.

Griswold is an assistant professor of sculpture and 3-D foundations at Austin Peay State University.

AEIVA is located at 1221 10th Ave. South.

HUNTING DRAGON EGGS

Children ages 12 and under are invited to participate in the second annual Dragon Egg Hunt hosted by the UAB football team on Sunday, March 25, at the Football Operations Center.

And people of all ages are invited to attend the event, according to a news release from the athletic department.

Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the egg hunt will start  at 3 p.m.

During the egg hunt, the Legacy Pavilion practice field will be divided into two areas -- one for kids ages five and under and one for kids ages six to 12 to begin.

In addition to the egg hunt, children can have their face painted, visit with UAB mascot Blaze and have photos taken with UAB football players and staff.

There will also be giveaways, including two UAB Football VIP packages, inflatables, games and food trucks.
