Ava Davis, a senior at Indian Springs School, lives in Crestwood and often visits nearby Woodlawn.

It was there that she saw an unmet need – a lack of bus stop shelters. So Davis took action.

Using a $1,000 grant she received in June through the Birmingham chapter of the Awesome Foundation, Davis built a shelter for a bus stop on Georgia Road in Woodlawn after getting permission from the BJCTA.

The shelter was also her Girl Scout Gold Award project.

“I chose to build a shelter because of my frustration at people having no place to sit or no cover from weather conditions when waiting for the bus,” Davis said.

“I think its unfair for them to not have a place to wait out of the rain,” she said.

With help from her parents – Susan Swider and Colin Davis – and some friends, Davis built the shelter in two days in October.

“I made it out of pressure-treated wood, so it will last a long time,” she said.

She said that she is “very satisfied” with the shelter, and she hopes it will inspire others to do similar projects.

“I think that every bus stop should have a shelter,” Davis said.
