Vulcan Park & Museum offering walking tour of Woodlawn on May 5

Vulcan Park and Museum will present the final event in its annual Spring Walking Tour Series with a visit to the historic Woodlawn neighborhood on Saturday, May 5.

The tour series, which began in 2004, allow participants to “take a deep dive into the history of a very small part of Birmingham with an expert,” said Vulcan spokesperson Kara Kennedy. “Participants experience the city in real time by interacting with it.” 

The approximately two-hour Woodlawn tour, to be led by Elizabeth Barbaree-Tasker of REV Birmingham, will begin at 9 a.m.

Participants will learn how Woodlawn residents have cultivated partnerships with nonprofits and other entities in recent years to improve the community’s food, housing, retail, education and health services.

Stops will include Christ Health Center, Grace Episcopal Church, Woodlawn High School, The Cottages at Wood Station residential development and the area’s commercial district.

About 40 people usually take part in the tours, according to Kennedy.

Earlier this spring, the series visited the downtown loft district and Redmont Park.

The cost is $12 ($10 for Vulcan members), and space is limited. To register, go to visitvulcan.com.
