2019 Spring Walking Tour: Five Points South - Preserving Neighborhood Values
to
Vulcan Park and Museum 1701 Valley View Dr, Birmingham, Alabama
Each Spring, Vulcan Park and Museum hosts a series of Walking Tours which highlight various areas of Birmingham. These tours provide an invigorating way to experience the history and architectural beauty of Birmingham’s neighborhoods and districts. Participants are invited to step into the shoes of the architects, visionaries, socialites and entrepreneurs who sparked the magic in the Magic City.
The second series will be held on April 13 and 14 in Five Points South. Birmingham’s first streetcar suburb immediately attracted neighbors of economic and religious diversity. Over one hundred years later, Five Points South residents and merchants are working together to sustain its legacy as an open, welcoming community. The collective values of the neighborhood are at the heart of a recent forward-looking plan to hold on to their unique character while preparing for new growth. Exciting parts of the plan are in effect now with new projects coming in 2019 and beyond. As you would expect from this neighborhood, they did it their way, and are now a model program for other neighborhoods.
Join the Five Points Alliance for a special tour of the Five Points South neighborhood. Learn about the history and recent growth of this area fueled by leading culinary artists and niche retailers, and how this area has transformed from an industrial neighborhood to a family-friendly entertainment district filled with historic homes.
