Birmingham Speaks
St. Luke's Episcopal Church 3736 Montrose Road, Mountain Brook, Alabama 35213
Opera Birmingham continues BIRMINGHAM SPEAKS, a series of community conversations which highlights how art and life intersect to open discussions about the healing power of art. The next discussion in this series, INDEPENDENCE EVE: A COMPOSER CONVERSATION on October 28 at 6:30 P.M. at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, is inspired by Independence Eve, a new one-act chamber opera exploring the troubled journey of race relations in America.
Hear from the composer, Sidney Marquez Boquiren, and the librettist, Daniel Neer, when they come to Birmingham to share insight and inspiration surrounding the creation of this emotional and relevant opera. Opera Birmingham’s general director, Keith A. Wolfe, leads the discussion. A reception will follow the conversation. Admission is $25. Tickets may be purchased at www.operabirmingham.org.
Independence Eve is comprised of three independent scenes, each taking place on July 3 of different decades in unspecified American cities, and focuses on the stories of three character pairings (three black males and three white males), struggling with identity and acceptance amidst issues that span one hundred years of the American experience. It is a tribute to the journey we are all on together.
Opera Birmingham will present Independence Eve on January 24 and 26, 2020. BIRMINGHAM SPEAKS: INDEPENDENCE EVE is sponsored by Medical Properties Trust.
