Atlanta’s Will Foskey tells a story at Good People Brewing Company during Funny Free Friday, an event presented at the venue by Goulash Comedy.
Birmingham comic Chris Ivey founded his production entity, Goulash Comedy, to give local acts more stage time and offer area fans the chance to see hot young comedians from across America.
Ivey continues that effort the first Friday of every month on the patio at Good People Brewing Company downtown with Funny Free Friday — a mix of local and touring stand-up comics with a different lineup each month.
The next event in the series, which Ivey started in 2017, is set for Jan. 4 at 9 p.m. Admission is free.
Touring acts at Funny Free Friday have included fast-rising young comic Trey Moe; David Perdue and Trey Mack, who’ve performed on Comedy Central; and Sean Conroy, who’s appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
Ivey also does his own set and books a couple of other local comics.
“This gives people in the city a chance to check out our amazing comedy scene,” he said.
“Birmingham comedy is thriving,” Ivey said.
And the Funny Free Friday gigs have “a fun vibe.”
“People are there with their dogs, drinking beer and laughing,” he said.
Comics appearing Jan. 4 include Richard Douglas Jones of Memphis, Tenn., who’s appeared on TV’s Comedy Central; Isaac Kozell, who’s played the Hell Yes Fest in New Orleans, the biggest comedy festival on the Gulf Coast; and Jason Leonard of Lafayette, La. There will also be a couple of Birmingham comics on the bill.

In addition to Funny Free Friday, Chris Ivey and Goulash Comedy have some other events scheduled in January.
