The following is a roundup of some news items from Birmingham City Hall, including a brief rundown of the regular meeting of the Birmingham City Council held today, Oct. 16.
DISTRICT 5 FORUM
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and Councilor Darrell O’Quinn will host the District 5 Community Forum at Boutwell Auditorium downtown on Tuesday, Oct. 16, according to a city news release.
Department heads will be on hand from 5 to 5:50 p.m. to answer residents’ questions.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. with comments from Woodfin and O’Quinn.
Parking will be free at the Boutwell parking deck for this event.
HELPING HURRICANE VICTIMS
This week, the city is hosting a supply drive at Boutwell Auditorium downtown to assist the many people affected by Hurricane Michael, according to a city news release.
The supply drive hours on Tuesday will be from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The hours for Wednesday through Friday will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The following Items are to be collected daily:
- Canned goods
- Bottled water
- Cleaning supplies (brooms, mops, gloves, cleaners, disinfectants, trash bags, etc.)
- Tarps
- Shovels
- Garden rakes
- Work gloves
- Hammers
- 5-gallon buckets
Neither clothing items nor shoes will be collected for the supply drive.
Volunteers will unload cars as motorists pull up to Boutwell Auditorium.

CITY COUNCIL
The Birmingham City Council — at its regular meeting for Tuesday, Oct. 16 — dispensed with almost all its business for the day as part of its consent agenda.
City Council President Valerie Abbott told attendees at the meeting today that the weekly consent agenda consists of items that are “routine and noncontroversial.”
No items were added or removed from the consent agenda today at the request of council members.

Editor's note 10-18-18 3:20 p.m.: This post previously contained an announcement of a citywide cleanup scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20. However, that event has been cancelled to the threat of rain, according to a news release this afternoon from the city.
