BPL Executive Director Floyd Council

Floyd Council, who in November became executive director of Birmingham Public Library, enjoys what he does.
“I love being a 21st-century librarian, and everything about the multifaceted skills and passions that I bring to my work keeps me excited,” said Council, who prides himself on being an information professional able to lead in what he calls “the digital age.”
Council — formerly central library administrator for the Atlanta Fulton Public Library System — has gained a national reputation for his efforts to mentor other librarians and managers, according to a BPL news release.
“Mentoring is important to me because I have been well mentored,” he said.
Council is also a strong supporter of equity, diversity and inclusion in libraries. He will oversee 19 branches and 285 employees in the BPL system
A Mississippi native and U.S. Army veteran, Council has a bachelor’s degree in media communication from American College and a master’s degree in library and information science from Florida State University.
In addition to Atlanta, Council has worked in libraries in Dallas, St. Louis and Nashville during a nearly 15-year career.
And he’s set high goals in his new job.
“BPL is committed to providing excellent service, programs and partnerships,” Council said.
