Woodfin presents $455 million FY 2022 budget to City Council

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin presented a proposed $455-million operating budget to the City Council on Tuesday, May 18, according to a city news release. The city’s Fiscal Year 2022 begins July 1.

“This fiscal year represents restoration and growth,” Woodfin said. “This will be a year of unprecedented investment in our city both from the public and private sectors.”

“We stand at a moment of recovery and restoration,” he said.

The budget supports neighborhood revitalization, provides merit and longevity pay and a 1.5% cost of living pay adjustment for employees, the release states.

More than $14 million is dedicated to neighborhood revitalization, including $10 million for street paving and $3.15 million for demolition and weed abatement.

Woodfin’s proposed budget restores full funding to boards and agencies in partnership with the city, funding that was reduced in the Fiscal Year 2021 operating budget due to the economic impact of COVID-19.

The Birmingham City Council voted on Sept. 29 to adopt the $412 million budget for Fiscal Year 2021. It was much smaller than the $451 million budget the city adopted for Fiscal Year 2020.
