Alabama Waldorf School will host its Crocs & Socks Gala, one of its largest annual fundraisers, at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve on March 9 from 6-9 p.m.
The event features food, drinks, live music, prize raffles and a silent auction, according to Cassia Kesler, AWS marketing director. AWS also auctions off unique, handmade art created by each of the classes working with local artists.
The gala will honor eighth-grade teacher Luke Lucas, who’s been on the faculty since 2000 and is the chair of the AWS College of Teachers. The 2019 gala is dubbed “Crocs & Socks” after Lucas’ favorite footwear.
Classes at AWS range from nursery through eighth grade and are based on an experiential, holistic approach, according to Kesler.
“Waldorf education is about nurturing the whole child — body, mind and spirit,” she said.
“It’s an inclusive, well-rounded education,” Lucas said. “We’re interested in balancing things out for our students as opposed to focusing on just one thing they’re good at.”
Gala tickets are $50 at the door or $40 in advance and include two drinks and hors d’oeuvres provided by El Barrio. To purchase tickets, call 592-0541, visit the school office or go to alabamawaldorf.org.
