A NATIONAL EVENT
The Department of Music will host clarinet players from around the country at the 17th annual UAB Clarinet Symposium from March 16-17 and offer two free public concerts, according to a university news release.
The weekend offers workshops, master classes, clarinet choir, recitals and clinics by 16 of the nation’s finest clarinetists.

Osborn has performed on four continents since his recital debut at the age of 17 at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He has performed as guest principal clarinet with the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Seattle Symphony and the American Symphony Orchestra.
Osborn is appearing in place of Corrado Giuffredi, principal clarinet of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, who was previously scheduled to attend but is ill and unable to travel, according to UAB Media Relations.

A UNIQUE PROGRAM
The new Master of Social Work program at UAB received full accreditation this month from the Council on Social Work Education, according to a university news release.
“Our mission is simple,” said David Pollio, distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Social Work. “We aim to train the best social workers. And accreditation is an important step in achieving this goal.”
Small, face-to-face classroom formats give students the chance to get to know their professors personally.
Students are taught clinical practice using cutting-edge educational techniques, and there are many internship opportunities at organizations that have long relationships with the department.
Last year, faculty led a group of students on a study trip to Kenya, and this is to be repeated in the spring term. There will be other international field placements and study abroad classes moving forward.
