TWG2022 AT UAB
At a press event at BBVA Field on Monday, May 17, The Birmingham Organizing Committee for The World Games 2022 announced that UAB will host several competitions across its campus and will partner with the global event on multiple initiatives.
The Games, an international multi-sport event organized with the support of the International Olympic Committee, will hold its 11th edition in Birmingham from July 7-17, 2022, with about 3,600 athletes from around the world competing for medals in more than 30 sports.
The following competitions will take place on the UAB campus:
- BBVA Field, the home of UAB men’s and women’s soccer, will host lacrosse.
- The UAB track and field facilities will host the tug of war.
- The University Recreation Center will host racquetball and squash.
UAB will also serve as the Foundation Sponsor for The World Games 2022 Legacy Memorial and the Presenting Sponsor of UAB Athlete Village, which will offer housing in UAB residence halls for athletes, coaches and officials.
UAB Medicine will be the Presenting Sponsor for athletics and spectator medical services at The World Games 2022 venues.
“Not only is UAB opening up their world-class campus as host for competitions and 'Athlete’s Village' for many of our athletes and coaches, but their partnership extends to several other areas including leadership and support for our entire medical committee,” The World Games 2022 CEO Nick Sellers said.
Sellers called the arrangement with UAB “an enormous partnership."
WBHM HONORED
Public Radio WBHM 90.3 FM recently won four regional Edward R. Murrow awards, including the award for Overall Excellence, according to UAB News.
WBHM also won awards in these categories:

Regional Murrow Award winners will now advance to compete in the national Murrow Awards competition. National winners will be announced in summer 2021.
“This was a tough year for so many people, but our news team was there every step of the way reporting on the issues our communities faced,” said Gigi Douban, WBHM news director.
The Radio Television Digital News Association has honored outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971.
THE BUSINESS TOP 25
The UAB National Alumni Society recently announced the winners of its 2021 UAB Excellence in Business Top 25 Awards.
The Top 25 program annually celebrates the success of dozens of alumni-owned or alumni-managed businesses, according to UAB News.
The winners will be recognized during a virtual ceremony on Thursday, June 24, at at 6:30 p.m.
