SpeakFirst Kylan Benson and Sydney Cook first place novice team Mountain Brook High School debate tournament.
SpeakFirst freshman Kylan Benson and Sydney Cook took first place in the novice division of the Mountain Brook High School Debate Tournament this weekend. Benson and Cook, both freshmen at Ramsay High School, were the top seeded team with an undefeated 6-0 record going into elimination rounds.
SpeakFirst defeated Auburn, Huffman, Hoover, Oak Mountain, Vestavia Hills and three Mountain Brook teams to win the tournament. SpeakFirst junior Darpha Carson and sophomore Aimee Williams reached the quarterfinals of the varsity debate division defeating teams from Hoover, Vestavia and Mountain Brook high schools.
SpeakFirst is the competitive academic debate initiative for the nonprofit Impact America. SpeakFirst serves Birmingham City Schools sponsoring a complete Middle School Debate League as well as a competitive high school debate team. Any student in a BCS high school may apply for a spot on this highly competitive team.
