Charity Moore — a co-founder of the ChocolateMilk Mommies breast-feeding awareness group— received one of the Vulcans Community Awards for 2019. Nominations are now open for the 2020 awards.
Created in 2014 by the Vulcan Park Foundation, The Vulcans Community Awards have celebrated the civic pride and community spirit of more than 65 citizens in the seven-county Birmingham metropolitan area.
Vulcan Park and Museum is once again searching for people who are making a positive impact in the area for The Vulcans Community Awards for 2020.
Now through September 30, area residents can nominate people in Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby and Walker counties who work daily to serve, lead, effect change or make a difference in their communities.
But this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a twist in the usual format for The Vulcans.
The formal awards dinner typically held in the fall to honor the dozen or so honorees has been cancelled.
Instead, the Vulcan Park Foundation will create a six-month special exhibit showcasing the stories of people who have triumphed over adversity and risen to the occasion during the pandemic.
Their stories will also be shared weekly via social media leading up the opening of the exhibit in February 2021 in the Linn-Henley Gallery at Vulcan Park & Museum.
“We ask all of you to help ... transform The Vulcans Community Awards from an annual banquet celebration into a year of sharing the stories and honoring the selfless individuals in our midst,” said Angela Wier, director of development at Vulcan Park Foundation, in a news release.
The Vulcans honor citizens who exemplify civic pride, leadership and progress in four award categories:
- The Lifetime Achievement Award is given in recognition of a lifetime of work on behalf of the community in the public, private or charitable realms.
- The Hero Award recognizes brave acts that have demonstrated selflessness in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
- The Servant Leadership Award is given to honor selfless service to others in the Birmingham area.
- The Game Changer Award recognizes leadership in innovative projects that have made, or are likely to make, a positive impact in the region.
The Vulcan Park Foundation is the non-profit that operates Vulcan Park and Museum on behalf of the city of Birmingham.
Nominations for The Vulcans will be reviewed by an independent panel.
