The popularity of online shopping has hurt traditional retailers but the internet can’t provide a human touch, according to Cassie Bolden, co-owner of Birmingham Candy Co., an old-fashioned shop operating in a Pepper Place pop-up.
“We offer something every day you can’t get from a computer — a smiling face and a warm welcome,” she said.
”We believe in good old Southern hospitality by greeting all our customers like they’re a new best friend,” said co-owner and chief candy maker Wayne Bolden.
The pair opened their pop-up in July and are scheduled to be there until mid-November. They also have “big plans” for December that will be announced on social media, Cassie Bolden said.
The store offers such sweet treats as peanut brittle, Southern pralines and chocolate truffles. The favorite items in the store include “anything with our caramel,” Cassie Bolden said.
They stick to the traditions of small-batch candy making by using fresh, local, “straight-from-the-farm ingredients,” Wayne Bolden said. The store also stocks some traditional manufactured candies such as jawbreakers, pixie sticks and bubble gum.
